Striving for Excellence

If you think you have what it takes to work with some of the brightest individuals in the world, consider a job at a New York or London financial center. The energy at these sites is palpable. Being one of the thousands of people simultaneously descending on a vital area of a city during morning rush hour is an unforgettable experience: as sweaty as a dance floor…

Lucrative opportunities abound in many different areas of specialization, and you don’t necessarily have to be a math wizard to work for a world-class finance company. Some of the primary areas of specialization include trading, financial planning, mergers and acquisition, research analysis, quantitative analysis, information technology, real estate acquisition and property management, insurance, private and retail banking, risk management, compliance, legal and marketing. In addition to employee positions, consultants play a major role in many departments, and some are with a company for years. These independent contractors don’t receive benefits, but hourly rates are substantial.Although the jobs are interesting, it’s really the pay and benefits that keep the applications rolling in. The hours may often be long, but the compensation makes it all worthwhile. In addition to a base salary, many employees receive a generous bonus at the end of the year. Most U.S. financial corporations have an employer-matching 401k plan in addition to a pension plan. The healthcare coverage is excellent, and companies often have in-house gyms to help keep the employees fit and healthy. Fine restaurants surround the financial centers, so the gyms are always busy with diners burning off calories.

Many companies offer paid internships and welcome college students and recent graduates who want to test the waters while sharpening their skills. This is a great way to get your foot in the door and is likely to increase your chance of procuring permanent employment in a department of your choosing. These positions are very competitive, so applicants should have at least a 3.0 GPA. Check company websites for program information.

New York and London are exciting, vibrant cities in which to work and play. There are plenty of entertainment venues to help workers unwind and enjoy free time. Music, plays, museums and pubs are just waiting for you. Come and join the party!
